In spirit of WIAW, I’m admitting I had these two items yesterday:

Cake, at lunch time – really delicious.  Congrats to my friend & co-worker for winning the “Superstar award” – for being an amazingly hard worker who did a great job leading our team!

And Chinese take out for dinner, as we were trying to get some primer / painting done in the living room / dining room / entry area.

Both of those foods, while delicious, did not leave me feeling too great last night.  So to go along with Jenn’s “Staples” theme, here are some healthy food staples I could have had instead – and to get me back on track!

Staple healthy breakfasts:

Overnight oats!  Whether in cookie dough or voluminous form, they keep me full with fiber, healthy fats, and protein powder mixes in easily to give them extra nutrition.

Smoothies.  Current favorite has cherries and cottage cheese.  Seriously, do it.

Breakfast OR lunch – or even dinner:

Egg sandwich!  I like mine with cheddar cheese and tomato, but avocado & nutritional yeast make a great combo, or swiss & jam.  Sweet and savory for the win.

Clean lunches:

Salads, of course!  This one was “grab & go” style from the cafeteria at work – spinach, avocado, scallions, tomatoes & mandarin oranges.  I don’t like the prepackaged dressings they sell, so I sprinkled mine with some pure balsamic vinegar.

Salad bar salad with multiple sources of protein: mixed greens, spinach, black beans, chickpeas, eggs, carrots, banana peppers, sunflower seeds, parmesan, and balsamic.

Staple “healthier” desserts:

Fro yo, of course – watch the sugar!  I get enough in the toppings. ;)

Chobani’s new Vanilla Chocolate Chunk – gotta watch the portion on this as the calories are kind of high, but it’s like protein enriched chocolate chip ice cream – so good!

What do you want to eat after a day of overdoing it?

We all have those days. Popcorn for dinner two nights in a row… whoops. I have never tried nutrition yeast on eggs, I have to give that a try!

When I overdo it, I crave water-filled fruits and vegetables. I mostly turn to clean salads and cucumbers…I also try to stick to high protein foods like greek yogurt. It’s like your body knows to balance it out!

When I go overboard, it’s usually on sweet so I always crave something savory in order to “cleanse” my palate! I also find that it decreases my sugar cravings when I cut out the sweets for a day!

After a day of not the greatest eating habits, I ALWAYS want to reach or a big old salad. It’s great because I can adjust the ingredients accordingly, and I get to cancel out the “bad” that I’ve eaten with the “good”. (Or at least that’s how it works in my head :D )

Incorporating veggies into every meal that I can always helps to get me back on track!
That cake does look delicious, though. :)

I LOVE the new Vanilla Chocolate Chunk Chobani! So amazing. I agree though–it’s definitely dessert-worthy, especially with all that sugar! However, the serving size is one cup, and ice cream servings are 1/2 cup, so it’s actually pretty reasonable when those adjustments are made. ;)

Big salads and stir-fries with lean protein are my go-to “detox” meals after I over-indulge. :)
